CHERRY HILL COOLSTORES

Big things in store

Needs + challenges

Cherry Hill Coolstores plays a vital role in the agricultural industry, handling substantial volumes of high-value products, including:

  • 15,000–16,000 tonnes of potato seed
  • 5,000–6,000 tonnes of raspberry and blackberry canes
  • 34,000 tonnes of carrots.

To sustain their large-scale operation and meet growing demand, they required purpose-built facilities, including a potato processing facility, a cane storage shed, and a cool storage shed with a dedicated carrot wash line. The challenge was to deliver these solutions efficiently while tailoring them to the specific demands of the agricultural industry, allowing Cherry Hill to remain focused on their core business.

Success made simple

According to Cherry Hill Coolstores: “Working with Bison really gives us the confidence to allow them to do what they do best … build the facilities that we need, to do what we do best.” This partnership resulted in:

  • Purpose-built spaces for potato, cane, and carrot operations.
  • Streamlined construction with minimal disruption to daily work.
  • Facilities tailored to handle the scale and complexity of their agricultural processes.
  • Cool storage that controls temperature and CO2 levels, and uses ambient air to assist with humidity and energy requirements

The results

  • Extended capacity and efficiency foe their clients across key operations.
  • Potato processing: Can now efficiently handle 4,000 tonnes of seed.
  • Cane storage: Capacity for 6,000 tonnes.
  • Carrot operations: A cool storage facility with 3,000 tonnes of capacity and a carrot wash line for 18,000 tonnes annually.

    Driving logistics forward

    Needs + challenges

De Bruyn’s Transport services the mining logistics, aquaculture, heavy general freight and bulk goods sectors. A family-owned company founded in 1965, it has grown to become one of the largest logistics providers in Tasmania, operating 150 heavy vehicles and 300 trailers. The company needed new state-of-the-art facilities to support its expanding operations, including:

    • A spacious and versatile workshop to handle heavy machinery.
    • A 5-tonne crane to assist with lifting equipment that couldn’t be moved manually.
    • A tailored wash bay, fuel station and warehouses for cool and dry storage.
    • An ice making facility.
    • A durable, high-quality construction.

The challenge was delivering a purpose-built facility quickly and efficiently with minimal disruption to their busy operations.

    Success made simple

Working with Bison Constructions proved to be a seamless process for De Bruyn’s Transport, who said it was “an amazing achievement and a very speedy process”.

    Key features included:

    • Custom crane installation: The 5-tonne crane was a critical addition to the workshop, enabling staff to safely and efficiently move heavy machinery.
    • Fast delivery: The entire build process was completed with remarkable efficiency, keeping the project on time and on budget.

Exceptional build quality: Strong, durable and ready to withstand heavy operations and any weather conditions.

    The results

  • Smooth transition: Consolidated multiple smaller premises into twin, purpose-built facilities – boosting operational efficiency.
  • Stronger brand presence: Visually striking structures clad in De Bruyn’s signature green.
  • Optimised site layout: Spacious design allows for easy access and manoeuvrability for De Bruyn’s large fleet.
  • Custom-designed spaces: Tailored facilities cater for every part of the business, from storage to distribution and vehicle maintenance.
  • Time-saving automation: The automated truck wash keeps the fleet looking good in less time.

A fresh new building for US to service YOU.

In 2024 we completed our new warehouse and office space, designed to better serve our customers and support the growing needs of our operations.

On the 1st of November we celebrated the official grand opening of our new office and warehouse with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by the Hon. Jeremy Rockliff, Premier of Tasmania. A big thank you everyone who joined us for this special event and to our partners that worked with us to construct this state-of-the-art facility.

The just under 2000m2 warehouse is a fantastic centrally located storage and distribution space big enough to ensure it serves well into the future. Adjacent to the warehouse, our office space is designed to allow a collaborative and productive environment for our team, wherever they maybe located, ensuring we can provide excellent service to our valued clients.

    Industrial-strength value and benefits.

    Needs + challenges

When shaping his vision – and transforming an old service station site into a warehouse
for his client, The Laminex Group – Gerard said Bison was the clear choice to meet several
key needs and deliver more than expected. This included smart ways to save time
(especially by building the roof on the ground, rather than at height), superior strength
and durability, all-weather loading and unloading, clever capacity-adding ideas, and a
highly efficient construction process. Structural integrity was especially important for the
roof, with its 45-metre span and the demands of holding 100 kw of solar panels.

    Success made simple

The process was a dream for Gerard, who was “very impressed with the professional
approach and how easy it was to talk to them … everyone knew what they were doing
(and) just worked together like one big family”. He said the clear spans achieved are
“amazing when you look at the engineering of it”. For him, there are many standout
    features.

    • An extensive awning area that is the “envy” of truck drivers, allowing B-Doubles
and semis to load and unload undercover, safe from sun and rain.
    • A mezzanine floor that adds significant pallet racking storage.
    • Doors hung higher than openings for bird-proofing.
    • Concrete tilt-up panels for protection against bumps, scrapes and vermin.
    • A cost-effective build: “Because they do it all the time and are set up so
professionally, they can do them at a very competitive price.”

    The results

  • Significant time and cost savings of building roof at ground level.
  • Additional pallet storage of around 40–50 tonnes on mezzanine.
  • Durability: with added protection against impacts, vermin and birds.
  • Easy, efficient loading and unloading, in all conditions.

“The thing that makes Bison builds different … is the high quality of workmanship (and) structural strength – it’s really amazing. The standard is so far higher than any other warehouse I’ve ever seen.”
